Unveiled on April 15th 1982, the 'Tower of Juche Idea' is the world's second tallest monumental column. Juche is the official state ideology of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The idea of Juche was developed by Kim il-sung as the guide and foundation of all conduct in North Korea. The meaning of Juche is "self-reliance" and "independence" in politics, economics, defense, and ideology. In theory, North Korea's withdrawIal from the world economy was designed to create self-reliance and independence from other countries. In practice, however, the nation was forced to rely on the USSR, and later China, to sustain itself.
