Boys wearing the typical scarves associated with the communist 'Pionner' movement perform on stage, at the Mangyongdae Children's Palace, in Pyongyang. This is a public facility where children are engaged in extra-curricular activities, such as learning music, foreign languages, computing programming and sports. During my first visit to Pyongyang, I was invited to a dance, music, gymnastics and singing extravaganza involving a large number of incredibly gifted young people extolling the virtues of socialism and praising the wise guidance of North Korea's leaders.
